Happy New Year!

We hope everyone had a great Holiday season and a Happy New year! With the Holidays behind us though, it’s time to get back to work, and that means a new progress update…albeit a bit late due to the hectic month we had, between the launch of Focal Engine, Continuum RT Build 13 and the Holidays…but we have a few surprises in store, and this isn’t just a progress update, so read on!

Focal Engine

Focal Engine has been, by far, the biggest undertaking/launch in our companies history. It is the culmination of years of ideas, and 9+ months of near daily work, from both core team members and partners, and it’s only getting started! Before continuing though, if you haven’t yet heard of Focal Engine, or haven’t yet read the launch blog for it, please do so now: Focal Engine Launch Blog

Since Focal’s initial launch late last month, we have pushed a few small updates, fixing small issues, such as the inability for users to login with their account’s emails (previously only usernames worked), and adding new functionality, like the ability for advanced users to edit RT’s block.properties file if they wish. Well, today, with the launch of this blog, a more sizeable update is coming to Focal Engine…1.16 support!

Thanks to the modular nature of the engine, we managed to get 1.16 support online very quickly, and it is now available to all! Just download the latest version of Focal from your downloads page (or the free downloads section, but more on that later), install the prerequisite mods mentioned below, and enjoy!

This update also brings with it the ability for users to download and use Focal Engine without a Continuum Graphics account. You will only be able to download and update our free shaders while not logged in though, so keep that in mind. If you want to download paid and Early Access products, you will still need an active Continuum account, an internet connection, and will have to own the product in question of course. The latest version of Focal Engine will be available from the free downloads page going forward though, as well as the downloads section of the account page.

Installation instructions for Focal Engine 1.0.3

Using Focal Engine

Once you have your preferred version installed, launch the game and head to options > shaders > and click the ‘Continuum Products’ button in the top right. From there, you can download any of our free, public releases, or input your continuum.graphics account login credentials via the login button in the top left, and press the login button, as shown below (click to enlarge):

Once you’re logged in, you should see all your currently available Early Access/Paid products. From here you’ll be able to select from available versions, and download them, all from within the game, including Continuum RT Build 14!

Build 13 and onward specifically will only be available for download from inside of Focal Engine. Also, legacy Optifine shaders, including older versions of our own shaders, will fall back to the Optifine pipeline when using Focal, and should work as they normally would!

Continuum RT

Continuum RT is getting a new build to go along with this update as well. This build brings with it a fix for the histogram based auto exposure breaking the shader entirely on AMD graphics cards, a fix for a light leaking bug specific to 1.16 Optifine that was affecting RT particularly badly, improvements to direct perceived brightness of emissives (helps a lot in the nether specifically), as well as a few small performance and quality of life improvements.

It’s important to remember that this build, and all future builds will only be accessible through Focal Engine and will only usable with Focal Engine.

We also want to once again shoutout Ultimate Immersion for the fantastic video he put out of Continuum RT Build 13,  give it a watch!

Continuum 2.1

We are still working on a new build of 2.1 that will add the features teased in the last progress update, as well as fix a bug in 1.16 that is making some users enchanted armor highly emissive. This bug has proven to be somewhat hard to track down, especially with Robo’s limited time last month, between University and the Holidays. Hopefully we will resolve this issue soon.

Speaking of the next build however, we gave our friend Hodilton a Preview of Build 13 and he made a nice video showcasing it last month! It shows off some of the features we teased in the last blog. You can give it a watch below if you’re interested.

Work on moving 2.1 to Focal will likely start sometime in the coming months. We have no set date yet, nor ETA for the first Focal Enabled build. The shader will have to be almost entirely rewritten for this, but it should be more than worth it…with as much as a 2x speedup possible, as well as a lot of fixes, enhancements, and new features that were not easily possible, or possible at all with Optifine. We are excited for 2.1’s future on Focal, and can’t wait to share more about that when the time comes.

Stratum

We still had a fair few additions to Stratum last month, despite the Holidays and whatnot. We once again kept to the theme of 1.16 nether update items (Mythical is quite interested in them), and while this build was also delayed by the goings on, it is also launching with this blog, and should pair nicely with the Focal Engine 1.16 update and new RT Build!

Also worth noting that since the focus has still been on 1.16 Nether blocks, the 1.12.2 version is only getting minimal updates in this build.

Also, the update to the Stratum System Requirements was postponed due to some RAM issues and overall system upgrades I (Soulshot) was personally dealing with over the last month. Hopefully I will find some time to update those here soon.

Textures added and/or changed in Build 11:

Added

  •  Nether Gold Ore
  • Shroomlight
  • Blackstone
  • Gilded Blackstone
  • Stripped Warped Stem
  • Warped Planks
  • Crimson Planks (both WIP)

Tweaked / Fixed

  • Re-added Cracked Stone Brick to 1.12.2 version

Until next time

Thank you all for your continued support all these years, and especially through 2020. We couldn’t have brought Focal to life without you.
